Enrique Munoz Garcia’s paper on Risk-Based Passive Fire-Protection Optimization has been published in the February edition of Oil and Gas Facilities Magazine by the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
The paper centres around the fact that Passive Fire-Protection (PFP) location is often determined by simplistic assumptions, standards, guidance and methods – all of which do not always consider the real response of the structure – or individuals – to fire.
A comparison between the different methods is provided, as are case studies that have resulted in optimum PFP schemes. In particular, Enrique discusses performance-based fire-collapse analysis, which provides an understanding of the response of the individual members, as well as the entire structural system, to fire.
