This year we have taken on three interns from different universities across the UK, giving them the opportunity to work within a technical consultancy that specializes in the management of man-made and natural hazards across a wide range of industry sectors.
We asked Peter, Lewis and Aya to introduce themselves and to talk about what they have been working on so far. This is what they had to say…
Peter Booth
“My name is Peter Booth and I am currently on a 12 week placement at MMI’s Warrington office. I have just finished my third year at Imperial College London, studying for an M.Eng in Chemical Engineering. I have recently completed my first project; the development of a new software tool to visualise the quantitative risk assessment results for clients. This involved developing code in Visual Basic for Applications to run an external piece of plotting software. I chose to intern at MMI because I wanted to experience working for a consultancy and I have already learned some really useful skills.”
Lewis Williamson
“My name is Lewis Williamson and I am currently studying a degree in Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Aberdeen. I had been looking for an internship as a Consulting Structural Engineer and I met MMI at a careers fair a few years ago and thought several of their areas of work looked interesting. One of MMI’s work areas in structural fire design appealed to me as I have never covered this area of structural engineering at university. Structural fire design is the sector of MMI I am working in and so far it’s been great. I have been given my own project to work on which involves developing a spreadsheet that can predict lateral torsional buckling of beams with 3 sided fire protection exposed to fire. I have also been assisting the PFP team in Aberdeen on the PFP and penetration seals register for a major client.”
Aya Helmy
“My name is Aya Helmy and I have just completed my first year of Engineering at Cambridge University. I chose to complete my summer placement at MMI Engineering as I was impressed by the variety of work undertaken by the consultancy as well as the extensive range of sectors which their projects involve. Over the last 4 weeks I have been introduced to numerous projects across several engineering disciplines and have been directly involved in a number of them myself. I have gained experience using ABAQUS software for thermal stress analysis, modelled components of a geopolymer production plant using Solidworks and produced segments of JavaScript code for managing digital signatures. I feel that I have greatly benefited from my internship so far, not only in terms of gaining practical experience but also in allowing me to make a more informed decision about specialising and selecting course options in the future. My colleagues have been very supportive mentors and have made my experience so far both worthwhile and enjoyable.”
